Black and grey roses on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two full-blown roses with a bud and several leaves, arranged in a vertical cluster that runs from the wrist towards the elbow. The rose petals and leaves are rendered with fine, engraved-style linework and layered shading, giving them a detailed, vintage look. The ink is entirely black and grey, set against a plain, softly lit white background.

The rose garden at Carrow Point had never once flowered in the salt wind, and everyone in the harbour town said so. Old Mabel Trewin kept it anyway, in clay pots along the sea wall, feeding them with fish heads and rainwater she carried up from the cistern in two buckets. The fishermen laughed at her. They said the roses were sulking because the sea had taken her husband, and that a woman who talked to flowers would end up talking to gulls.

One February, a boy called Tobiah Ferris came down from the inland farms looking for work on the boats. He was thin and quiet and had nowhere to sleep. Mabel gave him the lean-to by the wall and a bowl of broth, and asked nothing of him except that he water the pots when she was too stiff to bend. He did it without complaint, and by March there was a green bud on the leeward pot, tight and dark as a bruise.

The storm that came in April was the worst anyone remembered. Boats broke their moorings and the harbour master shouted himself hoarse. In the morning the sea wall was white with spray, and Tobiah was gone, along with the small skiff he had been mending. Mabel did not weep. She walked out to the end of the wall with a pair of shears and cut the two biggest roses she had, both full open and heavy with rain, and laid them on the stones where the tide was turning.

The skiff came in on the next flood, rowed by a boy with a split lip who had spent the night clinging to a buoy off the point. He stepped onto the wall, saw the roses, and stood very still. Then he picked up the nearest one and held it to his face, and for a while neither of them spoke at all.
