Pink blossom tattoos on both forearms
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms show clusters of pink blossom flowers, with the upper cluster on each arm rendered in deeper rose tones and the lower blooms in paler pink. The petals use soft, feathered shading and light outlines, which gives a watercolour effect across both arms. The palms are turned upwards in the foreground, and the neutral grey background keeps the focus on the ink.

The customs hall at Harwich smells of wet wool and vending-machine coffee, and the officer with the grey crop keeps turning your passport over as though the photograph might change its mind. In your coat pocket sits a tin the size of a hip flask. Inside, pressed flat between sheets of tissue since April, are the last petals from your grandmother's tree.

Open it, he says, and you do, palms up on the steel counter the way she taught you to hand over anything fragile. The petals have dried to the colour of old watercolour, rose at the heart and paler at the edges, with veins still faintly visible like the lines of a map nobody has needed for years. He asks whether any plant matter is declared. You tell him it is not fruit. It is only what the wind took off a tree the council meant to fell for a bypass.
He reads the form, then the tin, then you. You wait. Somewhere behind the glass a kettle clicks off. He lifts a single petal with the tip of his pen and holds it against the window, where the grey light comes through pink and thin as tissue. He says his mother had a tree like that in Cork, and they picked the fruit off it every autumn whether anyone wanted it or not.
He does not write anything down. He slides the tin back across the counter and taps the lid twice, the way you might tap a door for someone you intend to see again. Then he tips it, just slightly, and three petals drift onto your open palms, light as nothing, and you stand there holding them while the queue behind you waits for you to close your hands.
