Red high-top sneakers with a pencil

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A pair of red high-top sneakers with white laces sits in a pile with a pencil standing upright between them and a pair of 3D glasses with red and blue lenses in front. The design uses bold black outlines, with black and grey shading giving the shoes volume and white highlights on the laces and glasses. Red ink dominates the composition, which is set against plain, lightly tanned skin.

The last print of the night always smelled of vinegar and hot dust, and Maureen Pike had learned to love that smell more than her own perfume. She sat at the back of the Regal on Calder Street with her red high tops propped on the seat in front, the way Mr Okonedo had told her a hundred times she shouldn't, and she watched the projector beam cut through the smoke. Somewhere in the dark, a boy from the sixth form had left a pencil wedged between the seats, and she had picked it up without thinking, the way you pick up anything a stranger has dropped.

The glasses were the old cardboard kind, red for one eye and blue for the other, and the film was a black and white western that had been shown so many times the splices had begun to hum. Nobody needed the glasses for it. Maureen put them on anyway, because the manager's nephew had come down the aisle earlier shouting that the third reel was in 3D, a lie he told every Thursday to get girls to sit closer. She laughed out loud at the empty row and her laughter bounced off the balcony.

When the lights came up she found the shoes had come untied in the aisle, one lace trailing towards the exit like a dare. She knelt, pencil in her teeth, and laced them up tight, double knots, the way her father had taught her before he left for the docks and never came back from the last one. Then she stood, tucked the pencil behind her ear, and walked out into Calder Street with the cardboard glasses still hooked over her nose, seeing the whole wet city twice.
