Honda logo tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows the Honda H emblem inside a rounded rectangle with a bold black outline. The H is filled in red with grey shading along its inner edges, giving the logo a slightly raised look against the skin. It sits on the outer ankle, with cuffed denim and silver glitter trainers in the frame and a wooden floor behind.

Hold the lantern still, boy, because this is the bit where the engine room goes quiet. Third winter out of Gdansk, the chief found a crate in the forward hold that nobody had ordered. Inside was a square-cornered badge with a black rim as thick as a finger, and in the middle a red letter H, its inner edges shaded grey so the metal looked pressed up out of the plate.

Nobody aboard would claim it. Mrs Achterberg in the galley said it was bad luck to carry a letter that wasn't yours, and the mate swore it was a crest off some ferry that had gone down near Cape Race. So Tomasz, who was eleven and useless at everything except listening, carried it up to the stern locker and nailed it above the bunk where he slept.

Six days of green water over the rail came next. The rudder jammed on the seventh night, and the lamps in the wheelhouse guttered out one by one. Tomasz swore afterwards that the H was the only thing he could see in the dark, the grey edges catching what little light there was so it seemed to hang off the bulkhead on its own. The chief fixed the steering with a spanner and a lot of cursing, and we all lived, which is more than the ferry's crew managed.

When we docked in Liverpool the crate was empty and the badge was gone from the locker. Tomasz had it buttoned into his coat, and he never once said whether he'd taken it or whether it had simply decided to go with the one who needed it most. I have it now, on the wall of my shed. Same red. Same black rim. Still doesn't belong to me.
