Cartoon boy and tiger on a red wagon

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a spiky-haired cartoon boy riding a red wagon, with a striped orange and black tiger stretched out behind him and small motion marks around the wheels. A band of orange and black flame or grass sits below the figures. The bold black outlines are filled with flat red, orange and white, and the design is set against plain skin on a single upper arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harold Pike had been told the hill behind Marrow Lane was no place for a wagon, so on the first warm Saturday of June he dragged his grandmother's red cart to the top of it, whistling. His tiger, Brackett, who had never been consulted about anything, sat in the cart's tail with his chin on the handle and watched the grass with the look of a cat who had already decided how this would end.

They went down like a dropped spanner. The wheels hummed, a crow lifted off the hedge and swore at them, and the bottom of the slope came up faster than Harold had planned. Brackett stretched out behind the wagon, tail flat as a ruler, and yowled with what Harold chose to believe was joy. Dust puffed from the axles in little curls. Halfway down, the cart hit a tussock Harold had not seen and left the ground.

The landing was in the bracken where the council had burned the verge the week before. The ash was still warm, and the cart came out of the smoke with one corner blackened and Harold's hair standing straight up like a struck match. Brackett landed on his feet, which he considered owed.

Nobody came out to scold them. Mrs Pike, at the window of number nine, had watched the whole descent with her tea going cold, and that evening a tin of shortbread appeared on the back step with a note tucked under the lid: Next time, take the long way round. Harold ate two pieces, then turned the note over and drew the route on the back, with a big arrow going straight down the hill.
