Red hockey gloves with banner on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo of a pair of red hockey gloves, with a white maple leaf on the cuff of the upper glove and a banner across the lower section reading DROPPIN' MITTS. Thick black outlines define the shapes, with solid red fills and simple highlights on the gloves. The design sits centred on the skin against a plain teal background.

The Pickering Falls arena had a rule painted above the home bench that nobody read, because the paint had flaked to a ghost years back. Gordie Vance read it every game anyway. He stood on the wet concrete with his mother's white maple leaf stitched on his cuff, and he wondered whether the rule was about dropping your mitts or about who got to pick them up.

The trouble started in the third period against Lakeshore, when Lorne Pike, a visiting winger who delivered milk before dawn and still smelled faintly of it, skated past and said something about Gordie's mother that was not fit for the Sunday bulletin. Gordie's gloves came off as if they had been waiting all season for the chance. One landed in the crease and the other skidded under the Zamboni gate. The whistle went, the crowd went quiet, and for one long breath everybody in town believed the rink was about to go up in flames.

Nothing happened, not then. The referee, Dolores Shant, picked up both gloves with two fingers as though they were dead fish, carried them to the penalty box, and looped them over the rail with a length of orange ribbon. 'Dropped is not thrown,' she told the bench. 'Mitts get collected after the game.'

Lorne Pike never came back for an apology. Gordie's gloves hung on that rail every Saturday until the ribbon faded to pink, and the sign above the bench got a fresh coat of paint that said, in careful capitals, DROPPIN' MITTS IS NOT LOSING.
