You are behind the counter of the all-night bakery on Tanner Street at ten to three, wiping the glass with a cloth that gave up hours ago, when the bell over the door goes and a man walks in wearing a red devil suit with a forked tail that drags through the sawdust. He has a pair of horns taped to a headband and a grin already halfway to his ears. In one hand he holds a pink iced ring doughnut high above his head like a torch at a rally, and he announces to the empty shop that tonight he is the Lord of the Late Shift.

You ask him for the money. He says the devil doesn't pay, he collects. You point out that the doughnut is in his hand and not in a bag. He considers the doughnut with real tenderness, then tells you his name is Walter Hobbs, though everyone on the estate calls him Good Homer, because he has never once in his life refused a favour. He says it on a banner he had painted onto the side of his cart, and he insists you have seen it, which you have not, but you nod anyway because the cleaners from the council offices are coming through the door and they want their usual.
He buys them all a doughnut. He buys the taxi driver two. He leaves the ring on the counter for the cat that lives under the bins and tells you, very seriously, that a devil who keeps his word has to keep it warm until dawn. You spend the rest of the night pretending you do not believe him.
At six, when the shutters go up, the box is empty apart from one ring of pink icing, and beside it lies a single pink carnation wrapped in a napkin. The napkin says, in careful capitals, OWED: ONE FAVOUR. SIGNED, LORD OF THE LATE SHIFT. You put it in the drawer with the other IOUs, which by now is quite a heavy drawer.
