Red lettering quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind with her bare upper back and shoulder visible, one hand raised into her red hair. Red serif lettering in five short lines sits across her upper back, below the shoulder blade, reading a verse of text. The image has a warm, grainy, film-like look against a dim room with a patterned wall and blinds, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

The barn went up on the coldest night of the year, and by morning the top field was grey with ash. Dad stood at the gate in his good coat, looking at the black beams still breathing smoke, and said nothing about who had struck the match. Everyone in Harrow Cross knew who had been seen carrying paraffin down past the churchyard wall. They just needed somebody to say it aloud, and my father would not, so the men came up the lane instead, lanterns swinging, boots loud on the frost.

I let them stand in the yard while I finished the bread. Mam had taught me that a woman who hurries a door shows she is afraid of what is behind it. So I wiped my hands, took the good knife from the dresser, and walked out into the cold with the loaf under my arm. Their faces were all turned to the hayloft window, where the glass had cracked from the heat. Nobody looked at the ground.
At first light I went out alone and crouched in the wreckage. The snow was packed hard around the doorway, and in it I found a glove stiff with paraffin and a tin lantern with a bent handle that I knew belonged to Walter Pell. I turned it over in my hands until my fingers ached. Then I set it on the step of the church hall, where the whole village would find it on their way to Sunday service.
When I walked back across the field the ash rose around my boots in small grey clouds, and every step I took left a dark print that anyone could follow. I did not hurry. Behind me the bell began, slow and sure, and I heard the lane go quiet.
