Red lilies sleeve on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm sleeve shows several red lilies in bloom alongside closed dark red buds and green stems. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and highlights, giving them a lifelike, painterly finish. The blue and green background fades into branches and foliage, and the flowers wrap around the arm from wrist towards the elbow.

The year the bridge washed out, a boy named Tam Holloway followed her up the track, sent by his mother to fetch her back before dark. He found her kneeling where the blue scree met the birch line, turning a closed bud between her finger and thumb. "They don't open till someone says their name," she told him. "Say it, then." He wouldn't. He stood with his hands in his pockets while the wind combed through the branches and the sky went the colour of a bruise.

On the way down the mist came in thick as wool. Ruth walked ahead with the basket on her hip, stopping every few yards to listen, and Tam heard nothing but his own breathing. Then, faint from the rocks, a voice called a name that was not his, and another voice answered it. In the basket, the lilies that had been shut tight since morning began to open one petal at a time, red as lamp glass, and the path lit up under them.

They reached the village by that light. At the first door the flowers closed again. Tam never learned whose name had been called on the pass. He only knew that Ruth pressed a small red petal between two leaves in her Bible every spring, and that from then on she sent him up the track alone with a list of things to say.
