Lotus flower on the outer thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A lotus flower with several layered petals sits on the outer thigh of a person wearing a white shirt. The petals are drawn with fine, fine-hatched linework and soft grey shading that gives them volume and depth. The flower is centred on the thigh against plain, lightly lit skin, with the shirt hem across the top of the frame.

Right, sit down, the lift's been out since Tuesday so you'll have the stairs, same as the rest of us. Ninth floor, mind the fourth where the bulb's gone. Now listen, because this is the one about Mrs Okonedo's window box, and nobody believes me but the pigeons.

She had a tin bath on her balcony at Harrowgate House, thirty years she'd had it, filled with river silt she'd carried up in carrier bags from the canal towpath. Everyone said it was a daft place for a seed. Wind off the car park, cats, the council men who cut the buddleia back every spring. But she pushed a bulb of something into that grey muck and told it to think about water.

It took two summers. The first year there was nothing but a single leaf like a green spoon, and the boy from flat twelve kicked a ball at it and laughed. The second year the stem came up through the scum on top of the bath, and one morning in July a flower sat on the surface, shut tight as a fist, with the mud still clinging to its heels.

It opened over three days, petal by petal, each one lifting out of the dark and going pale at the tips, and by the Sunday the whole block had come out onto its landings to look. Mrs Okonedo sat in her plastic chair with her hands folded and said nothing at all. Then she told us the flower doesn't stay clean for its own sake. It opens because it has been down in the mud and found the light anyway.
