Gold floral vine tattoo on an arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The image shows a delicate botanical design of trailing vines, slender leaves and a small five-petalled flower across the upper arm. The linework is fine and shaded lightly, with metallic gold tones and some darker accents along the stems. The soft focus on the lips and shoulder above keeps the arm as the clear subject against a warm, sepia-toned background.

The gold came up that spring through the roots of the bramble on the pit head at Tallow Bank. Nobody believed it until Ida Penrose scored a stem with her knife on the washhouse step and the sap ran bright as a sovereign.

The manager called it foolishness and sent the boys back down the shaft. They dug for three weeks and found only grey rock and the wet smell of the level. Ida kept cutting the vine anyway. Every leaf she pressed into her palm stayed gold for a month, and each night she traced them along her forearm while her mother pretended not to watch.

On the first hard frost the bramble began to climb the chapel wall, and wherever a child had been playing, small gold flowers opened in the dirt. The vine was drawing something up from under the village, and the village was living on what it brought. Ida's brother Owen took a lamp down the old Carn level to see where the roots went, and he did not come up at dusk.

Ida walked to the pit head at first light with a knife and a heel of bread. She cut one stem for herself and left the rest standing, because a root that gave gold to men with picks would soon give them nothing else. When Owen climbed out at noon, his sleeves were green with leaves, and the gold had gone from his hands back into the earth where it belonged.
