Full-colour botanical tattoo of red poppies, buds and green leaves wrapping from the shoulder down the upper arm of a person in a green vest top.

Red poppies and buds on an upper arm and shoulder

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several red poppy flowers with dark centres, green seed pods and buds, and long curving stems with serrated green leaves that run down the upper arm. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine darker outlines, giving a detailed, painterly finish. The arm is shown in side profile against a plain white background, with the design filling most of the frame.

The first thing you learn on the island is that poppies do not ask permission. They come up through the lazy beds behind the schoolhouse the year after the ground has been turned, red as a struck match, and by the time the ferry brings the rain they have gone to papery ruin and scattered their seed across the peat. Your grandmother kept a tin of that seed in the dresser drawer, beside the string and the dead batteries, and she would never tell you where the first plant had come from.

You were nine the summer the ferry stopped running for three weeks. Nobody came over except the postman in a borrowed boat, and the village turned in on itself the way it does, sharing tea and gossip. Your job was to walk the stone wall with a jam jar and count the buds. Each one wore a green cap like a little helmet, and you learned to lift it with a fingernail to see the crumpled colour folded inside, as if someone had wrapped a flame in tissue.

On the last morning of the blockade, the cap on the tallest stem split open while you watched. Petals unspooled over the course of an hour, slow as a sail filling, and the dark heart at the centre showed its stitch of black and yellow. You ran to the house with the news, and your grandmother came out wiping her hands, looked at the flower for a long time, and said only, "Well. There you are, then."

She let you take the seed head home to the mainland that autumn. You still keep it on a windowsill, rattling softly whenever the heating comes on.
