Red poppy and black lace on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A realistic red poppy with soft shading and a central stamen cluster sits over black lace-like scrollwork that runs up towards the top of the shoulder and down below the flower. The petals are rendered in bright red with darker shadows and fine highlights, while the lace is solid black linework with delicate mesh and leaf details. The image is a close crop of bare skin against a dark background, with the tattoo placed across the shoulder and upper chest area.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted the bobbins twice before the carrier's cart came, and still the pattern would not close. Forty pairs of bobbins clicked on the pillow in her lap, and the design her mother had pricked into the parchment ran out in a curl of mesh that refused to meet its own edge. Outside the cottage window the lane ran down towards the harbour at Seaton, where the tide was turning over the shingle, and nobody in Honiton had ever thought to ask whether lace could be made to hold a flower.

Her brother Tom had sent a letter from a whaler out of Hull, folded small and smelling of tar. He wrote that on long watches the sea went flat for days, and the men counted their sugar and their shot and talked of nothing but ports. He had asked for a sprig of something red to pin in his cap. Nell had no red thread, only the black silk her mother dyed in a pot of oak galls, so she did the only thing that seemed to answer. She worked a poppy out of the lace itself, leaving its heart open in a ring of tiny holes where the stamens would sit, and she cut the shape free of the pillow with no colour in it at all.

The parcel reached the ship in March. Tom wrote back in April, shorter than before. The flower had gone round the mess table, he said, and a boy from Lyme had sworn it was painted. Nell read that twice, then took the pillow down from its hook and began a second poppy, working a single red thread through its middle so that anyone who looked closely would see exactly where the colour belonged.
