Watercolour poppy on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A red poppy in soft, blended pink and red tones forms the head of the design, with a dark centre and loose splatter marks. A fine black stem with small curls and dots trails down and to the left from the bloom. The tattoo sits on the side of a torso, with the flower placed toward the upper ribs and the stem pointing down.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The miller's wife had a garden behind the mill where nothing grew but cabbages, until the spring the wind carried a single red seed over the wall and dropped it in the mud beside the water butt. She watered it from the pail she used for the hens, and it came up thin and grey-green, with a stem as fine as thread and a bud that hung its head like a bell that had lost its rope.

When the flower opened it was the colour of a bruised lip, a red that softened into pink at the edges as if someone had dipped it in rain and let the water spread. The miller's wife said it was too showy for a working yard. She picked it every morning anyway, and every morning more of the bloom had gone to the wind, leaving the petals loose on the cobbles like spilt paint.

Her son Tobias, who was seven and fond of questions, asked where the flower went when it lost its petals. She told him the poppy kept the dark in its middle and gave the rest away, which was the bargain all flowers made with the summer. He counted the black specks that fell from the stem and asked if they were seeds. She said they were the flower's last words, and he should not step on them.

That winter the mill stopped and the stream froze over. In spring the stem had curled itself around the water butt like a child's signature, and the bloom came back redder than before. The miller's wife left it standing. She said the flower had kept its promise to come up, and that was all a garden ever asked of anyone.
