The tin rattled when the guard lifted it, and Halina pressed her palm flat on the counter so he would not see her hands shake. Inside were poppy seeds, a kilo of them, grey as dust and sealed in wax paper, enough for the bread her mother had baked every Sunday in a village that no longer had a bakery. The guard, a young man with a cold, unscrewed the lid and sniffed.

"Declare these," he said. "Seeds are a problem." She told him about the loaves, the rolls soaked in honey, the way her mother scattered the seeds over the crust like someone sowing a field in miniature. He looked at the tin for a long time, then at the queue of lorries stretching back to the river, then at the stamp in his hand. Somewhere behind her a child was crying in a language neither of them spoke well.

He closed the lid, wrote a number on a yellow slip and slid it under the glass. "My nan had a bed of those along the back wall," he said, not quite to her. "Red ones, big as your fist. She said they only came up where someone had been careful." Halina did not know what to say, so she took the slip and nodded.

Three weeks later a postcard arrived at the flat in Leeds where she had found work. It showed a crooked window box with two red flowers opening from soil that had clearly been dug with a spoon. On the back, in pencil, someone had written only: Sown. Yours if you want them.
