Red rose and peony bouquet on the shoulder blade

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A bouquet of red roses, pink peonies and pale yellow chrysanthemums with green leaves curves across the upper back and over the shoulder blade. The petals are shaded with soft gradients of red, pink and cream, with darker reds and greens giving depth. The bouquet sits on the left side of a bare back against a plain light background, with a black off-shoulder top below.

Sit down, you, and mind the cat. I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it to me, out loud, because a thing said is harder to forget than a thing read.

On Skerrow there was one walled garden, and the wall was built by a man who hated the wind more than he loved his wife. Inside it, Mairi Lennox grew peonies the colour of spilled wine and roses so red the gulls would drop onto them thinking they were fish. Every October the boat came over from Hallan with its one engine coughing, and every October Mairi cut the best of the autumn chrysanthemums, pale as butter, and sent them across with the bread.

The year the storm took the jetty, the boat did not come. Mairi stood at the wall with her shears in one hand and a bunch of roses in the other, and she said to the empty sea, 'Well, they'll have to carry themselves.' And the old folk swear that when the moon came up, the bouquet was gone from her hand and there were marks in the wet grass going down to the shingle, small and neat, like a careful woman's steps.

Nobody on Hallan ever saw the flowers arrive. But the next morning the ferryman's widow found a bunch tied to her gate with red cord, the peonies already opening as if the sun had been on them all night. She never learned who had cut them, and Mairi swore she had not. The chrysanthemums, they say, still bloom out of season on the north shore, pale yellow, pointing the way back across the water.
