Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A red rose with orange outlines and a small rosebud sit above a black and grey spider with ornate markings on its body and a faint web beneath it. The spider came in through the coal hole the week Hannah Pell's roses went black at the edges, and by Candlemas it had strung a web across the whole lace frame in her front parlour. Nobody on Dunning Row would go near it. Mrs Ashworth swore it had crawled up out of the churchyard with the frost, and the lad from the chapel would not walk past her gate after dark.

Hannah was a lacemaker, and the spider was the finest hand she had ever seen. It worked through the nights, dropping threads so fine the lamplight barely caught them, and by morning the bobbins were dressed with patterns no woman in the valley could have pinned out. Its back was marked with a design like old church silver, scrolled and lobed, and she copied it onto her pattern cards in pencil, one line at a time. The collars sold to Leeds within the month, and she paid the baker's boy in silver for a week.
The roses were another matter. The big red bloom she had grown for her husband's grave stopped opening that spring. Its petals stayed tight and dark, the orange edge going dull as rust, and the rosebud beside it never swelled. She fed the spider more flies than it could eat and it spun on, indifferent, pulling the lace tighter and tighter across the frame until the room smelled of dust and cold iron.
On the last night of May she cut the red rose and laid it on the frame beside the spider. The spider came down its thread, walked once around the stem, and went still. In the morning the lace was finished, every thread of it, and the only mark on it was a single rosebud pinned in the centre, its petals opening where the light fell.
