Two forearms are shown, each with a red rose tattoo outlined in black. The left arm has a heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole beneath the rose, and the right arm has a key hanging from a beaded chain above a rose. The padlock, key and leaves are shaded in grey and black, while the roses use red ink with pale highlights and a pink wash behind the left rose.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass heart came back to Harrowgate Lane on a wet Tuesday, folded inside a supermarket bag, and Dorothy Pask knew it before she had unwrapped the newspaper round it. She had cut its twin forty years earlier on the bench beneath the shop window, filing the notches until the wards sat true, for a lad called Terry Vance who swore he would never need a lock on anything he loved.

He took the padlock to sea. Dorothy kept the key, threaded on a string of jet beads she had bought off a stall by the bus station, because she said a key should never be given away whole. Roses came in from the market every Friday, and she pressed one in the ledger each time a letter failed to arrive. Terry sent two postcards, both from ports with names she could not pronounce, and then the sea took the rest of him, or the post office did, and she never settled which.

The padlock was open when she turned it over. Someone had worked the shackle with a bent hairpin and tucked a single red petal inside the heart, dry as a biscuit. Nobody had signed the note beside it, only written in square capitals that the lock had waited long enough.

She fitted the key anyway. It turned with the same small grudging click it had made in 1978, as if the years were a sentence she had been waiting to finish. She locked the heart again, and this time she slipped the key into her own apron pocket, where it could find its way back to whoever came asking.
