Red rose and swallow on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large red rose with pink highlights fills the upper part of the design, with a black swallow in flight beside it. Dark green leaves and a few yellow-tinted accents sit around the flowers, with bold black outlines and smooth solid fills. The photo is taken at an angle along the leg, with the design running from the top of the frame down past the bottom edge.

The rose had gone soft in the heat by the time Nell Harrow reached the lychgate, its petals bruised where her thumb had held the stem too long. The church bell at Thornwick had been ringing for a quarter of an hour, and Tom Pell was already standing at the altar rail with his hat in both hands, looking as though he had swallowed a stone.

A swallow dropped off the gatepost as she passed. It was black as a cold hearth, with a forked tail that cut the air like scissors, and it did not fly off into the hedge as birds do. It went up the lane ahead of her, stopped on the wall, went on again, and only when she stopped did it stop too. She followed it past the mill, past the goose pond, to the old well where her mother had dropped her wedding ring the summer before she died.
The ring was not in the water. It was on a ledge in the wall, wrapped in a scrap of red cloth that the swallows had been lining their nest with for longer than anyone in the village could say. Nell took it out, and the bird flew once around the well and then to the church tower, where it sat on the weathercock and watched her run.
She came through the door with her skirts in her fists and pressed the ring into Tom's palm. She pinned the bruised rose to his coat, and the vicar, who had given up on her, began the service again from the top. Thornwick still does it that way. Nobody remembers why the swallows come back to the church eaves every spring, but they do, and the wall at the well is always lined with red.
