Red rose tattoo on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red rose with white highlights and dark outlines sits at the centre of the forearm, flanked by green leaves and a yellow-tipped bud. Surrounding it are black dagger shapes, star motifs and fine dotwork filling the background. The bold outlines and solid colour fills are set against the pale skin, with the design wrapping around the arm.

The groom's mother would not sit beneath the roses. She stood at the lych gate of St Ansel's with her skirts bunched in one fist, watching the bridal party pick their way over the wet grass, and when Nan Ketteridge asked her why, she only said that a rose with a dagger in its shadow has been promised twice.

Everyone in Halsey Fold knew the story, though nobody told it at weddings. Tobias Crane, a carter with a good cart and a worse temper, had walked the high road one Michaelmas with a red rose in his coat for each of two sisters. He gave the first at dawn and the second at dusk, and neither girl knew about the other until the stars came out over the orchard and a dagger of frost settled on the gate. By morning the orchard was black with rooks and Tobias was gone, leaving only a rose pressed flat in the mud and a row of little stars scratched into the mill sill.
The bride, Hannah Vell, did not care for old stories. She had sewn her own veil and counted the cake tins twice. When the vicar asked for the rings she held out her hand, the groom slid a plain band over her knuckle, and somewhere behind the pews the groom's mother let out a breath like a kettle coming off the boil.
At the wedding breakfast Nan found the old woman alone by the trestle, plucking a single red petal from the cloth and tucking it under the edge of the bread. "There," she said, not looking up. "Now the table has only been promised once."
