Red rose band tattoo around a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The collage shows a band of red rose buds and dark green leaves wrapped around the forearm, with one close view of the wrist. The flowers have bold dark outlines and solid red fills with subtle shading, and the leaves are rendered in deep green. The colour ink dominates against the pale skin, and the four photos frame the band from different angles.

The gate at Hollin Keep has been shut since the roof came down, and the briars have taken it the way ivy takes a wall. You have been sent up from the village with a billhook, a flask of tea gone cold, and a letter from the estate solicitor saying the family will sell whatever still stands. Nobody mentions the roses. Nobody needs to, because they are the first thing you see when the path turns: a red knot of buds thick along the broken lintel, dark leaves pressed flat like wet slate.

You cut for an hour before you find the chain. It runs under the bramble, green with age, and every link carries a single rosebud that has never opened. Mrs Ashdown at the post office told you the old lord's daughter tied them there the spring before she went south, and swore they would only bloom when someone came back to claim them. You work the first one loose. It is warm, which makes no sense in March, and the petals inside are the colour of pomegranate juice on a cutting board.

By dusk you have freed nine links and a rusted key. The key fits the postern in the south wall, which opens onto a walled garden where every bed has gone to nettle except one long row of roses, all in bud, all waiting. You sit on the cold step with the flask and the solicitor's letter, and you understand the sale was never about the stone. You fold the letter into the flask lid and leave it on the step, then take the key home and walk back up the hill for the rest of the chain.
