Red roses on a vine down the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

Several red roses with green leaves sit along a black swirling vine that runs down the side of the ribcage, with a few loose petals scattered among the curls. The roses are shaded softly to look realistic, with the colour ink dominating, while the vine and petal outlines are drawn in clean black linework. The tall vertical design follows the curve of the body.

Nobody had told the roses they were supposed to be dying. Mara found the first loose petal on the deck plates of Tern Bay at the start of the dark cycle, red as a cut, lying where the curved corridor bends toward the hydroponic drums. By the time she had followed the trail up the wall, she had counted eleven more.

The vine ran the length of the ship's spine, a black filament of cable ties and grafted rootstock that the first gardeners had bolted to the hull frame so the bloom would climb with the curve of the ring. Every rose had been budded from the stock in Greenhouse Two, the one Old Ruth swore came from a cutting carried off the Halden station before the blight. Ruth called them the nine-hundred-year roses. Mara thought that was a tale for children, until she held one up to the lamp and saw the veins had gone faintly gold.

She carried a petal to the cold room where Ruth lay under three blankets, her breath a slow thread. "Where did you get the cutting?" Mara asked. Ruth opened one eye. "From a woman who asked me the same thing," she said. "Water them on the turn and don't ask them to be kind."

Mara took the bucket up to the top of the wall, where the last open rose hung against the black line of the vine. She pressed a fresh petal into the seam of her coverall pocket, watered the stem, and left the rest of the trail for the ship to follow.
