Realistic red rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large, detailed red rose fills most of the frame, with its open petals shaded from bright red to deep maroon. The petals and centre are rendered with smooth gradients and fine highlights, giving a lifelike, three-dimensional look. The image is mostly colour, with a few pale swirling lines and faint black outlines curling around the rose on the skin, set against a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Morag had kept the walled garden on Eilean Dubh for thirty-one winters, and in all that time the roses had never bloomed in February. The wind came off the Atlantic sideways and salted every leaf, so only the gorse and the stubborn kale ever flowered. When the supply boat failed to come that month, she went out with a hand fork and began clearing the wall where the old briar had died.

Under the dead canes there was a rose. It was the deep red of wet brick, its petals folded so tightly they looked like cupped hands. At its heart, where a rose keeps its gold, a pale ring had opened, and something dark sat inside it, watching her. She told herself it was rainwater caught in the petals. She told herself that for most of the afternoon.

The next morning the boat came, carrying a young surveyor from the mainland who wanted to know why the sea wall had been mended in such strange, looping lines. Morag walked him up the path. He stopped at the garden gate, looked at the rose for a long time, and said nothing. She understood then that he had seen it too, the way its petals had turned to face the path as they walked.

That night she cut the bloom and carried it down to the harbour, as her mother had taught her to do with anything the island could not keep. She set it on the water and watched the tide take it out past the skerries, red against the grey. When she climbed back up the hill, the garden wall was bare again, and the cold morning light lay across the empty briar as though nothing had ever grown there.
