Realistic red rose on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large, detailed red rose in bloom sits at the centre of the design, with layered petals shaded from deep crimson to brighter highlights. Green leaves and foliage surround the flower, with a stem visible below, and a faint red outline of another floral design appears at the top right edge. The rose is the focal point, filling most of the frame against a plain skin background.

Thessa had been cutting back the wall roses since before the bread was set, and she was still at it when the tax man came up the goat track with his clerk and his brass seal. He wanted the hill terraces counted. He wanted the grain, the olives, and the one rose bush that had flowered red in a year of drought, because the magistrate in the lower town had heard of it and wanted a cutting for his wife.

"Take it," said Thessa, and went on snipping. "Take the whole wall if you can lift the thorns."
The clerk laughed, but the tax man did not. He was an old man who had once farmed a hillside himself, and he knew what a wall of roses cost in water. He pulled a leaf between finger and thumb and turned it to the light. The green ran deep as river weed, and the red folded down in layers like cloth stacked in a chest, each petal darker toward its heart. "It is not the magistrate's," he said at last. "It is the rain's, and the rain has asked nobody for anything."
He wrote the terraces down, the nine goats and the olive trees, and left the wall off the roll. The clerk asked why. The old man only shrugged and said the wall was too stubborn to count.
That winter Thessa kept the brass seal in the rain barrel so it would not tarnish. Each spring the red came back on the stone, stubborn as a debt nobody would collect.
