Traditional style colour tattoo of a red rose with an orange four-star ball and brown leaves on the chest, shown in a close-up with a side-by-side repeat.

Red rose with four-star orange ball

Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo

A red rose with layered petals and brown leaves fills most of the frame, with an orange ball containing four dark outlined stars placed over the centre of the bloom. Bold black outlines, solid fills and dark black shading on the petals and leaves give the design a classic flat look, with small highlights on the orange ball. The picture is a close-up of the skin with a second cropped panel of the same tattoo beside it.

Dear Nan,

The skipper has finally let us ease the net after three days of hauling nothing but weed and old boots. Dennis says the glass float we found tangled in the warp is one of the last orange ones from the Hull yard, the sort Grandad used to hang along the wheelhouse. This one has four black stars set into it, and someone has painted a red rose round it in rust and brown, which I'd call a lot of effort for a bit of glass.

Dennis wanted to throw it back. I said no. Grandad always said a float that comes up in a bad season is owed a proper look before it goes over the side. So I wiped the salt off with my sleeve and found the stars weren't painted on the outside at all. They were sealed in, as if the glass had been poured round them. Nobody I know can do that, and I'm not sure the sea could either.

We're home Thursday if the wind holds. Put the kettle on early and tell Mrs Pattinson the bread order can wait. I'll bring the float with me. You can decide whether it goes on the windowsill next to Grandad's, or back in the water with a wish on it.

Love, Jack
