Red chrysanthemum with leaves on the side
Japanese · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large chrysanthemum bloom dominates the image, its curled red petals layered around a small pale centre. Dark olive leaves and pale green stems frame the flower, with bold black outlines defining the petals and shading them from bright red to deep crimson. The design fills the frame against bare skin, with a patch of denim visible at the lower edge.

The big top went up on the common outside Haddley Bridge with two pegs short, and Ruth Ambrose counted the guy ropes twice before she let herself look at the tub by the wagon steps. Her father had carried the chrysanthemum cuttings through three winters of bad bookings, tucking them under the straw in the horse box like contraband. Most had rotted. One had held, and now it stood on the bottom step in the grey light, its bloom the scarlet of the ringmaster's coat from the years when the crowds still came in their hundreds.

Sol came down from the trailer rubbing his bad shoulder. 'Clarke's man took the posters off the feed merchant's wall,' he said. 'Says the council wants the field clear by Friday.' He looked at the flower and said nothing for a while, which was how Sol said most things worth hearing.
By noon the petals had uncurled further, each one bending back on itself like a hook that had caught on something and refused to let go. The dark leaves pressed against the canvas as if they wanted in. Ruth pinned the bloom to the lapel of her father's jacket, the only spangle the company had left, and went to find the one working spotlight with its cracked lens.
That evening six people paid at the gate. Ruth walked the sawdust in the jacket, and when the light found her she stopped beneath it and let the flower catch the glow. Its pale heart held the light the longest. Nobody clapped, but a child in the front row pointed, her mother leaned in to look, and for the length of one slow turn the old tent had something to show.
