Red rose with geometric shapes on upper arm
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A large red rose forms the centre of the design, with angular black lines and blocks cutting across its petals and leaves. Teal and green touches sit beside the bloom, and dark grey shading with drip-like strokes runs down the lower part of the arm. Bold colour dominates the upper section, with the subject placed on the shoulder and upper arm against a plain pale background.

Brother Anselm hands you the lead came before you have asked for it, because the rose in the north transept has been missing its heart since the February frost, and the abbot wants it back in the window by Lady Day. You take the cracked red glass in both palms. It is warm from the sun pouring through the south lancets, and when you tilt it the light splits into a dozen shapes that the old glazier must have meant as petals and must also have meant as blades.

The trouble is the cut. For three days you work with the grozing pliers, nipping slivers from the edges while the bell for Sext rings and rings across the cloister garth. On the fourth morning you find that the old leading was run over a candle someone set too close, and grey wax has bled down the lower panels like rain on a cold bridge. Brother Anselm peers over your shoulder and says to leave it. The men who made this window were not tidy men, and the monks who mended it after them were no tidier.
On Thursday the heart goes in. You stand on the scaffold with one hand flat against the stone to steady yourself, and the rose throws its red across your knuckles, the black lines cutting it into angled facets, the grey runs falling away beneath it toward the floor. You had thought the work was to make the window whole again. It was never whole, only lit.
When the vespers bell sounds, the sun slides off the glass and lands on the flagstones in the exact shape of the bloom. Brother Anselm comes down the nave, stops at the edge of it, and kneels in the red without looking up.
