Red rose with grey leaves on the neck
Botanical · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A single red rose bud sits at the top of a long thorned stem, with three leaves branching from the lower part of the stem. The petals are filled in solid red with dark outlines, while the leaves are shaded in greys to give them some depth. The design is centred on the back of the neck against a plain background, with a dark top filling the lower part of the frame.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and stop passing the good bottle along before I've started. This is a story about a rose that grew at the top of a hill farm above Clough Bottom, and the girl who would not pick it. Her name was Hannah Dacre, and the rose was the last thing her father planted before the frost took him.

Every spring the bud came up pale and tight, and every spring some lad from the village would climb the wall to cut it for his sweetheart. Three leaves on the stem, always three, and thorns the length of a finger. The lads came away bleeding and the rose stayed where it was. Hannah would sit on the wall with a flask of tea and tell them the rose did not want to be picked. They called her hard. She said she was waiting for the right hands.
Then one October a stranger came up the lane with a cart of mended saddles and a bad knee, and he did not reach for the stem. He knelt, pressed his thumb to a leaf and said his mother had grown roses just like it in a town where nobody had ever learned to read them. Hannah asked him what he wanted. He said only to see it bloom in the dark, which it does, if you let it, though nobody here believes me.
Hannah walked him to the gate that night with a lantern. When she came back the bud had opened, red as a struck match, and the thorns along one side of the stem had gone soft and green, as if they had been waiting all along to be asked.
So when you see a rose like that, you ask it what it wants before you reach. Now raise your glasses. Mind the thorns.
