Red spider lily tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two red spider lily blooms on a long, thin black stem, with a few small curved marks drifting above them. The petals and stamens are drawn in fine black linework with red ink filling and soft darker red shading. The flowers sit diagonally across the outer ankle, with plenty of bare skin around the small design.

The last of the swallows had gone south, and still Old Mab Corrie would not let the boy near the far field. Frost stood on the furrows every morning until noon, and under the hedge where the ditch ran black there were bulbs in the mud, papery and pale, that she had carried up from the river bank in a sack and told him not to touch.

Ask her what they were and she said they were for the dead, which was what her mother had said before her. The lilies came up red in the back end of the year with no leaves to hold them, standing on bare stems like men who had walked out of the ground to see who was coming. Tam, whose father had the farm before him, thought this was nonsense until the morning he found a single stalk with two blooms, unfolding in a sheet of rime, their petals the red of a split cherry.
He cut it for her, because she was ill with the cough and wanted something to look at. She took it in her two hands and did not thank him. She said the flowers would walk the road to the river if you let them, and that someone had to show them the way, and then she closed her eyes. Tam carried the stem to the gate that evening and set it upright in a jar on the post, where the light from the farmhouse window could reach it.
In the morning the jar was empty and the stalk lay across the lane, pointing north, with a thin trail of dark petals going up the frozen ruts. Mab was still in her chair by the stove with her hands folded, and Tam never did learn whether she had got up in the night to follow them.
