Small lotus on upper chest
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small lotus flower with a curved stem and a drooping petal sits on the upper chest, close to the collarbone. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark outlines that fade toward the edges, with a darker centre. The plain skin background and gentle lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

The lotus arrived at Hartley's Nursery in a wet cardboard box marked FRAGILE, and by half past nine on the Saturday you had already bruised two of them. Mrs Oyelaran wanted one bloom in the centre of each table at the marquee in Ashby Fold, and she wanted them grey rather than pink, because the bride had said the colour of rain on slate was the only thing she had ever loved about Yorkshire.

You worked through the morning with a pair of snips and a jar of cold water, cutting each stem at an angle the way old Mr Hartley had taught you, while the pond behind the glasshouse steamed in the thin sun. Your fingers smelled of sap and pondweed. Near eleven, the marquee filled with the sound of a fiddle being tuned badly, and a girl in a borrowed coat came looking for the flowers meant for the top table.
She asked whether lotus flowers close at night. You told her they sink under the water and rise again at dawn, which was what the bride's grandmother had insisted on over the phone, as if you might otherwise have forgotten. The girl nodded and reached out to touch the bloom nearest her, and a petal came away in her fingers, grey at the tip and soft as wet paper.
She looked at it for a long moment, then tucked it inside her glove and went back to the fiddle without a word. When the speeches started you counted the flowers on the top table and found them all there, except one, its stem still upright, its drooping petal gone.
