Reflecting sphere tattoo on the back of the head

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a head with a large tattoo of a hand holding a reflective sphere, which in turn shows a seated man and a room with bookshelves, windows and a doorway. The work uses fine stippled and engraved-style shading in sepia-toned greys, with soft gradients across the curved surface of the sphere. Behind the head is a framed print of overlapping yellow, blue and red fish, and the subject fills the centre of the frame against a dark textured background.

Dear Hal, the glass came on Tuesday in a crate that smelt of tar and wet straw, and I have not stopped looking at it since. The lens-man set it on the bench in the lamp room and went down the stairs without a word, as men do when the wind is getting up. It is a brass-rimmed ball the size of a cabbage, silvered on the outside, so the whole room hangs in it upside down and bent round the edges.

In it I can see the gallery rail, the clockwork of the light, and the window where the sea stands up grey and stitched with foam. There is a chair in the glass too, and a man in the chair with his beard in his fist, looking out at nothing. He is me, I suppose, though I did not put him there. When I sat down opposite with my pipe, he sat down a little after, slow, the way your father used to when his knees were bad.

Last night the storm put the lamp out at half past two. I climbed up with the matches and when I turned round the glass had gone dark, all but a pale square where the window should be. I struck a match and the room came back into it, lamp burning, and the man in the chair was bent over a sheet of paper, writing. I have not yet told him to stop.

I am going to finish this and fold it, and then I will see whether he finishes first. Yours, if the sea allows, Walter.
