Ray, the rain has been coming sideways down Kirkgate since Tuesday, and the awning on the fish stall has given up in the middle, so I am writing this on the back of an invoice under the counter with my coat still on. Mr Okafor from the veg stall says it will clear by Friday. He said that last Friday too.

Dad's plumb line is still hanging from the hook by the scales, the one with the brass bob that comes to a point like a bullet. You remember he used to check the awning posts with it every spring. Yesterday the bob swung so hard it kept clipping the sign, and I stood there sure the whole lot would come down on the trout. I was shouting at the delivery lad about the crates, and my voice went up like a kettle.
Then Mrs Pell came in soaked, with her grandson, and sat on the upturned bucket and asked if I had a pen. She wrote something on the back of a receipt and pushed it across. It just said relax in her round handwriting, with the l drawn long, running down past the line of the other letters as if she wanted the word to sink in. She said her mother wrote it on every bill she ever sent. I laughed so hard I had to hold onto the scales.
The rain stopped about four. I took the plumb line down, wiped the bob with my sleeve and hung it back up, dead still. Come home at Easter if you can. I will fry you chips from the cod that didn't sell.
Love, Dot
