Retro ray gun in red and blue
Dotwork · Other · Colour · Photo
A stylised retro ray gun with a long barrel, ribbed grip and a glowing muzzle is drawn in blue and red outlines, with a repeating blue and red line pattern suggesting motion. Shading is built from fine dots and stipple inside the body of the gun, and circles of red and blue sit on the handle area. The design sits on a close crop of skin with a partial tattoo visible at the top left and a light background.

Marjorie Quayle had the north postern half-open when the bailiff's boy came up the scree with the thing held out in front of him like a sick hen. "It was under the solar floor, miss, behind the loose stone where the wind comes in." He didn't want to give it up. She took it from him anyway.

It weighed less than a kettle and was painted in two colours that refused to agree. The blue outline drifted a finger's width from the red, so the whole barrel seemed to shiver in the grey light. Someone had stippled the body with dots, thousands of them, the way a printer might once have shown a planet. Three coloured circles sat on the grip, the smallest red, the largest blue, and where they overlapped the paint had gone dark as a bruise.
She carried it to the keep wall and pointed it at the valley, where the fog lay over Hollin Mere like milk in a saucer. The trigger was warm. When she pressed it, the ribbed barrel sang a note she felt in her back teeth, and a row of rings unfolded from the muzzle, red and blue, rolling out across the bracken. Where they passed, the fog peeled back and showed a town of glass towers she had never seen, every window lit.
The rings faded. The fog came back. The boy asked if they could go down and look. Marjorie wiped the muzzle on her coat and said the ledger was waiting, and that a girl who had seen the future twice in one afternoon had better sit down before she tried a third.
