Retro terminal and dice on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm with a scene of a retro handheld device whose green screen shows a cartoon figure, set above a red-toned helmeted head. Dice with a visible d20 face sit at the lower right, and a dark, greyscale background fades into the surrounding shading. Fine shading and highlights give the metal, skin and dice a smooth, photographic finish, with red and green used as the main accent colours.

The dice hit the lid of the ammo crate and rolled twice before Hob Carrick could say anything about it. I didn't need to look at the number. The little green screen strapped to my wrist had already told me the odds, which is the only honest thing a piece of salvage has ever done for me.

The terminal had come out of a collapsed shelter on the old ring road, along with a cracked radio and a staircase nobody would climb again. Its cartoon man, grinning and giving a thumbs-up, had greeted me every morning for three winters. Hob wanted it for the map it held, the one that showed sealed doors beneath Ludlow. He set his red-painted helmet on the crate beside the dice, its visor cracked straight across, and said his crew had lost four people looking for those doors.

I picked up the d20 and turned it over in my palm. Fifteen or higher and the terminal stayed mine, map and all. Below that, I'd hand it over and walk back to the coast with nothing but my boots. I shook the die once, let it go, and watched it tumble across the rusted metal until it stopped on a clean twenty.

Hob stared at it for a long time. Then he unbuckled the terminal himself and pressed it into my hand. "Map's no use to me," he said. "Go on, see if you're cleverer than my crew." The screen flickered. The cartoon man gave his familiar thumbs-up, and for once I believed him.
