Dessa had three hundred and forty-two televisions in the back of the lock-up, and every one still hummed when she plugged it in. The sign on the far wall had come from a closing shop in Hull, its letters flaking: WE DON'T BELIEVE WHAT'S ON TV. Her grandfather had painted it after the February the power went out and he sat in front of a dead set for six hours, watching the snow on the glass and refusing to change channel, as though the picture might come back if he was patient enough. It never did. He said it was the only honest thing a television had ever done.

She was in the yard with a grey hand she had cut from card and pinned to a broom handle, lifting it against the sky and trying to work out how a ribbon should hang when there was no wind at all. The landlord watched her for a while. "You're not selling those," he said. "No," she said. "I'm waiting for one to look like it's moving."

He left shaking his head. She carried the broom inside, switched on the nearest set, and let the static roll up the screen until the banner on the hand seemed, just for a second, to lift and turn over in the grey light.
