Small black cat on a lower leg

Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a short asymmetric skirt and teal ankle boots is shown from the waist down, with a small black cat tattoo on the outer lower leg above the boot. The cat is a solid black silhouette in a sitting pose, with simple edges and no visible shading or fine detail. The tattoo is the only ink in the frame, against a plain, evenly lit background.

The cat arrived in the last week of August, when the Bramleys were dropping faster than we could pick them. She came under the gate of the lower orchard with one ear torn and sat down in the grass as if she had been expecting us. My uncle Hal said she belonged to nobody, which was how he said most things he liked.

She kept to the rows nearest the packing shed. Every evening she sat on an upturned crate by the tap and watched the wasps work the windfalls, perfectly still, a black shape you could only tell from the stone wall by its edges. Hal called her Tuesday because she turned up on one. We left her a saucer of milk and the heel of the bread, and the mice that had been nosing through the sacks of Cox's went quiet.

On the last morning of picking we found the ladders counted and the Discovery apples stacked by the gate, each one with a bite taken out of it, as if someone had been checking them for worms. Tuesday sat on top of the pile, not in the least sorry, her tail wrapped neatly over her feet.

Hal laughed until he had to sit down on the wall. "Well," he said, "she's paid her rent." Then she jumped down and walked off toward the cottage with her tail straight up like a question mark, and I never did learn whose she was.
