Revolver and DAD banner on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A revolver pistol runs diagonally across the forearm, with a banner reading DAD across its grip and barrel. Two red and white flowers with dark green leaves and a few curling sprigs fill the spaces around the gun. Bold black outlines, grey and steel shading on the revolver and warm red, orange and dark brown tones give it a classic colour finish.

Sit closer to the fire, the peat only warms the one side of you. You want to hear about the gun that hung by the door in Dughall Ross's cottage on Scarvay, the one with the red flowers painted round it like a wedding cake. Nobody on the island ever saw it fired, and that is the first thing you must hold on to.

It was the February the Brenna Mhor went down in the sound. Three men aboard, and the wind out of the north-west so hard it took the roof off the old kirk. Dughall had the only flare pistol left on the island, a revolver his brother had brought home from the Canadian wheat ships, and he stood on the rocks at Ness with the thing in both hands and his wife holding his belt. He fired one red shot into the sky, and the whole sea went the colour of the inside of a shell. The men in the water saw it. The Dolphin saw it too, and turned, and brought them in with their hands on the gunwales.
After that he would not fire it again. He oiled it, wrapped it in an old sail, and hung it on two nails above the lintel where the children could reach it on tiptoe. His daughter Catriona painted the name across the grip in tin paint when she was seven, and the letters ran a little where the damp got in. Every spring the three of them tied a strip of red wool round the barrel, and every spring the wool rotted and was replaced. The gun never sent another flare. It just stayed up there, keeping watch over the door, which is all a father's thing needs to do most days, wouldn't you say.
