Ribbon banner with revolver, rifle and dinosaurs

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A coloured design drawing on a black background showing a red ribbon banner wrapped across the centre with the words I AIM TO MISBEHAVE. Behind and around it sit a silver mechanical part, a revolver and a rifle crossed below the banner, a brown raptor and a grey stegosaurus-like creature at the top, and a green shape with a red star. Small strawberries sit at the base, with bold outlines and shading in red, green, grey and brown.

The travelling show came through Harrow Flats the week the boiler gave out, and by Thursday half the town had a theory about the crates. Mrs Pim swore the little raptor had been sold to her as a christening gift. Mr Gorse said the stegosaur had eaten a Methodist. Nobody thought to ask Dorothy Vane, who ran the strawberry stall by the water pump, what she thought, which suited her fine.

On the Friday, the big steel engine in the depot seized with a groan like a cow in labour, and the ringmaster came running for help. Dorothy's cousin Eli had spent two winters in Denver fixing ore carts, so he climbed up with a spanner and a flask of gin and told everyone to stand back. The raptor took that as an invitation. It came over the hay bales in three long strides, straight for the strawberry punnets, and Eli dropped the spanner on his own foot.

Dorothy didn't reach for the revolver hanging on the nail behind the stall, nor the rifle Mr Gorse had brought for foxes. She knelt on the cobbles and held out a single berry, very red, very ripe. The raptor considered the whole village for a long moment, then took the fruit from her fingers as neatly as a bank clerk takes a coin. By dusk it was asleep under the red star flag on the cart, snoring softly, and the ringmaster was paying Dorothy in silver for the rest of the punnets.
