Skull in a star helmet, side profile
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A side-profile skull wears a rounded helmet decorated with a large five-pointed star on its side, with rivets and a strap hanging below the jaw. The skull and helmet are rendered in pencil with soft graded shading, strong dark tones on the helmet and hollow eye socket, and crisp highlights on the star. The plain white background and centred composition present it as a standalone design.

Dear Nell,

The helmet is on the bench under the lamp and the strap is giving me trouble. The leather has gone stiff as an old bootlace, so I keep stopping to look at the star instead. Your father always said it was the only thing he ever painted straight, and I see now he wasn't joking.
I found it in a Hampshire barn the week the flower order went wrong. Rust had got into the rivets and the white star had faded to the colour of weak tea, but the shape was still sharp at the points. Mr Pryce at the saddlery in Ledbury agreed to re-stitch the strap with waxed thread if I didn't mind waiting until Thursday. He asked who it was for. I said a wedding, and he looked at the helmet and said that was the first time he'd heard those two words in the same sentence.
The groom asked me last night whether a skull by the cake was too morbid. I told him the skull is only the frame. People will look at the star first, then the rivets, and by the time they notice the bone they'll already be smiling.
Bring the good tin of pencils when you come down on Friday. I want to shade the edge of that star myself, one hard line where the light falls, so there's something of mine on your day that nobody will think to ask about.
