Whale, constellations and paper boat on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A dark whale with a tail fin rises up the forearm, its body filled with a blue and gold galaxy and linked constellation dots. Orange and green circles, pale clouds and a small blue paper boat on a trailing string surround it. The shading is soft and blended, with bright colour across the whale and background elements against a plain, light backdrop.

Mrs Okonedo had folded the boat from the back page of the shipping notices before the ferry even docked, and she was still creasing its keel when Tomas came down the gangway with his cap in his fist. "It is for the whale," she said, and pressed it into his palm with the string already tied, a blue thread trailing from its prow like a leash.

Nobody on Harrow Island believed in the whale any more except the children and the old lighthouse keeper, who swore it had surfaced every autumn since the war, rising out of the Atlantic with the stars strung across its back like sequins. Tomas had told his mother it was nonsense. He had said so at fourteen, and again at twenty, and now at thirty-one he stood on the quay holding a paper boat and feeling foolish.

The mist lifted at dusk. Past the breakwater a shape turned over, dark as a bruise, and a fin the size of a sail cut the water. Its back was crowded with constellations joined by gold dots, and a small orange moon rolled off its shoulder and bobbed away towards the mainland. Tomas saw then that the old woman had never been talking about a whale.

He tied the string to the iron ring on the quay wall and let the boat go on the tide. He watched it spin slowly in the wake until the whale sank and the stars went under with it, leaving only the pale paper riding the swell, still folded, still trailing its thread back to the stone.
