Roaring bear watercolour arm sleeve

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large roaring bear with its mouth open dominates the upper half of the sleeve, drawn with loose, painterly edges and black ink splashes. Below it, blue, pink and orange washes suggest a mountain and landscape, with a small black bear silhouette near the bottom. The colour is saturated and the composition wraps around the arm from shoulder towards the elbow.

Its roar, the old men said, was the colour of a bruise going yellow at the edges, blue then pink then orange, and it rolled across the water until the mountains gave it back. Cook Halvard Brenn put down his ladle and went out with a loaf under his arm, because that was what his mother had done with the wolves at home, and a loaf had never failed her.

The bear took the bread, then a second loaf, then the cheese, and then it sat down on the hatch cover like a man waiting for a tram. Halvard asked it what it wanted. It answered by pointing its nose at the galley stove, where the pot of barley had gone cold.

So he lit the fire again and stirred. All night the bear watched him while the mountain behind it paled as the stars came out. By morning the crew found the bear gone, the barley pot scraped clean, and a single black hair laid on the galley table, which Halvard kept in his tin for the rest of his life.
