The radio had been silent since Tuesday, so Nell climbed the last switchback with the post sack on her shoulder, counting the pines the way her grandfather had taught her, one for each year the cabin had stood. There were forty-one of them in the dark wedge between the path and the rock. The cabin came into view at the top of the ridge, its shutters grey and its stovepipe cold, and beyond it the mountain wore its cap of cloud like a man holding his hat against the wind.

The door was unlatched. Inside, the log book lay open on the table beside a mug gone cold, and the last entry was in his square capitals: FIRST LIGHT ON NORTH SILL, 06:52. Below it he had drawn a small sun with rays, the way he did when the morning had earned it. Nell had taken it for a child's doodle until she turned back through the pages and saw the times stacked down the margin, every dawn since spring, the sun arriving a minute earlier each week and then, in September, sliding slowly back.

She sat on the stool he always used and waited. At ten to seven the cloud on the peak thinned and turned the colour of pewter, then white, and the light came over the ridge in a single fan. It struck the north sill and laid the shadow of the roof across the clearing like a ruled line, and the pines went from black to green in the space of a breath. She picked up his pen. Her hand did not shake, which surprised her.

She wrote the time beneath his entry, then drew one more sun beside his, a little crooked, with too many rays. Under it, in her own unpractised print, she added: Logged by N. Greaves, in his place.
