Roaring bear with bird on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large roaring bear head dominates the design, with a smaller bird head partly hidden in the shadow below its jaw. The bear is rendered with soft grey gradients, fine fur texture and bright highlights on the nose and teeth, while the bird is shaded more darkly. The design uses only black and grey ink and fills the upper arm against a dark background.

Every autumn the fog came off the water thick as wool, and the keepers at Scarrow Ness lit the lamp and hoped it would be seen. The old men said a lamp alone was never enough. Something had to call back at the sea.

Ada Merrin's father had told her about the bear, and she thought it a story for children until the winter the oil ran low and two boats went onto the Teeth in a single night. She climbed the cliff path with a tin of paraffin on her back and found the bear sitting at the edge where the turf gave way, grey as the stone behind it. Its mouth was open wide enough to hold a lantern. Beneath its chin, tucked into the ruff of fur, a gull's head watched her with one black eye and did not move.

She did not know what to do, so she did what her father did when the boats were out. She set the tin down, took off her cap and shouted into the fog. The bear answered. It was a sound she felt in her ribs and the soles of her boots, a roar that rolled out over the water and came back off the far rocks twice before it faded. Somewhere below, an engine slowed and a man called out a name she didn't know.

The gull lifted from the fur and flew out over the edge, low and steady, crying the way gulls cry when the herring are in. Ada followed it down the path with the empty tin and lit the lamp herself. By morning the fog had lifted, and the bear sat where it always sat, watching the sea, with the gull back in its ruff as if it had never left.
