Wolf head on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A wolf's head faces forward, framed by a dark shield-like outline with ruff-style hatching beneath the jaw. The linework is bold and the shading uses dense hatching and stippling to model the fur, with lighter grey on the muzzle and eye area. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on a leg with visible body hair, against a dark background.

The snow had crusted over the top field by the time Edith Pardoe went out with the lantern, and she heard the ewes before she reached the fold, a low complaint that rose and fell like someone talking in another room. Her brother Clem had taken the cart to Kendal three days back. The carrier had not seen him since, and the hay in the loft was down to the last bale.

The hurdles on the north side had been shoved inward, the wire bent back like the ribs of an umbrella. In the trampled snow she found a single track running up towards the crag, each print placed square and deliberate, the way a man walks when he is carrying something he does not want to drop. Beyond the wall, the dark had a shape in it. Two pale eyes caught the lantern and held.
It was a wolf, or the ghost of one, grey as the stone and bordered at the throat with a ruff of paler hair, its head held level as if it had been stamped onto the night. Edith did not reach for the gun on its nail. She had seen the dead ewe in the beck that morning, frozen stiff with its legs out, and she had meant to drag it up for the knacker and had not. The wolf's head dipped once, towards the hollow where the carcass lay. Then it turned and went up the hill, unhurried, and the snow took its tracks before she had finished counting them.
When she came back to the fold at first light the living ewes were standing in a close huddle, and the beck was empty. Clem's cart came over the brow at noon with the new hay and a crate of salt. She did not tell him about the wolf. She said only that the north wall needed mending, and he laughed and asked her what she thought would come over it.
