Wolf head and stag silhouette on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large wolf head with a lowered snout and pale eyes dominates the upper forearm, with soft, smudged shading around its fur and background. Below it, a smaller dark silhouette of a stag stands in a hazy landscape that fades into the skin. The tattoo is rendered in black and grey with fine detail in the fur and a soft, painterly gradient across the scene.

The snow had shut the Saddle Inn in for eleven days when the stag came up the track, its breath standing in the air like smoke. Marta Velle counted the bolts on the yard gate twice before she went out to it, because the wolves had been coming down from the high corries all month, and her father used to say a wolf will wait longer than a man can bear to watch.

The stag stopped at the water trough and did not drink. Its ribs showed through its winter coat and one antler had snapped short at the base. Marta took the lantern and stood beside the trough, and she saw the wolf then, not in the yard but at the edge of the pines, grey as the dusk and so still that the snow on its back had not melted. Its pale eyes were on the stag, not on her.
She did not open the gate. She sat on the mounting block with the lantern between her boots and told the stag what her father had told her about the old bargain of the pass, that the beasts of the high ground kept their word when the men had forgotten theirs. Nobody had ever told her whether it was true. The stag lowered its head to the snow, and the wolf came out of the pines one slow step at a time, and neither of them looked at her.
By morning the yard was empty. The trough had a skin of ice, and a single line of hoofprints ran out under the gate with the pawprints of one wolf pressed close beside them, stride for stride, up towards the pass. Marta hung the lantern back on its hook in the window and did not put it out until the sun had cleared the ridge.
