Roaring lion on upper arm and shoulder
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large lion's head roars with its mouth wide open, showing fangs, a pink tongue and teeth. The fur is rendered with fine, feathered strokes in tan, orange and brown, with darker black shading around the mane. The lion's green eye and the tattoo's wide framing across the shoulder and upper arm give it strong depth and realism.

Dear Nan, I'm writing this on the back of a flour delivery note because the till roll ran out and Mr Okafor says I'm not to waste paper before the first van. It's twenty to five. The ovens have been roaring since three, and I've learned the sound a deck oven makes when it's ready, a low rumble that comes up through the floor and into your shins.

Last night he left me on my own with the sourdough for the first time. He stood by the mixer with his arms folded and said bread tells you when it's ready if you stop talking long enough to hear it. I wanted to ask him how, but he'd already gone out to the van. So I did what he does. I stood very still in front of the proving baskets and listened. There was nothing but the fridge and the radio muttering about the motorway.
At half four the first batch came out and I scored the tops the way I've watched him do a thousand times, one clean slash at an angle. The crust split along each cut and opened up in a ragged golden mouth, all fine hairline ridges, like something about to make a sound you'd feel in your teeth. I set the loaves on the rack under the lamp, and the painted lion above the door, the one the old owner put up in 1962 with its green glass eye, seemed to lean in to look.
Mrs Pell from the chemist was first through the door with her bag already open. She picked up the largest loaf, turned it over, and said it looked like it was about to bite her. I told her that was the idea. She laughed so hard she had to put it down. Then she bought two. Mr Okafor came back in as she left, looked at the rack for a long time, and said nothing at all, which from him is a medal. Love, Priya.
