Tiger face on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tiger face is tattooed across the forearm, with a detailed brown eye at the centre and whiskers along the lower edge. The dark stripes and fur are built from layered black shading and soft grey tones that blend into the natural skin. The close, angled framing fills the image with the tattoo, with a grey floor and metal stand at the edges.

Dear Ray,

The tiger came off the lorry at Haddon Green on Tuesday with its eye open, which Mr Pruett says is the only way to tell a big cat is awake and not stuffed. Mother wouldn't let me go down to the field, so I went anyway after school and stood behind the hawthorn with the gate latch in my fist. She is called Sable, though the card on her cage says Rajah, and she has a face as if someone had painted the dusk onto her in long, wet strokes.

I think the thing I'd forgotten about tigers, from the picture book you sent, is the whiskers. Pale and stiff, they come out of her face like the bristles on a broom, and when she breathes out they shiver. Pruett's boy saw me looking and said she'd take my hand off for a penny. I didn't believe him, but I didn't put my hand through the bars either.

On Thursday the rain came and the field turned to soup, and the lorry wouldn't start. They're still here, stuck, and the whole town has been coming to look. Mr Ashby brought his camera. Nobody speaks loudly near her cage now.

Last night I sat up on the wall by the coach house and watched her pace the length of the canvas. Every time she turned, the lamplight caught that brown eye and it looked nothing like a cat's, more like someone who had stopped being surprised by anything. I wanted you to know I was looking for you in it. Write back soon, and tell me if Dublin has tigers.

Yours, Margaret
