The piece is entirely in black and grey ink against a dark background, and the composition fills the upper arm.

The frost had got into the top field gate again, and Nell Harrow chipped at it with the back of a spade while the lamp in the lambing shed burned yellow behind her. Her father's calendar hung on a nail inside the door, a seed merchant's freebie from the year before, and the picture on it had gone soft at the corners where damp had got in. Every January she turned it to the new month, and every January the same woman looked out at her, veil drawn close, eyes lowered as if she had heard something in the next room.

Nell had never been much of a believer, but she had kept the calendar. Her mother had pinned it up the winter before she died, between the feed tallies and a photograph of a prize heifer, and nobody had thought to take it down. Tonight a ewe was struggling in the straw at the back pen, and Nell knelt in the sour bedding with her sleeves rolled, feeling for the lamb's feet. She worked the way her father had taught her, slow and patient, one hand holding back while the other eased. She said nothing aloud. Her hands were clasped at her chest without her noticing, the way her mother's had been on the pew.

The lamb came in a wet rush just before midnight. It shook its head, sneezed, and bleated at the rafters. Nell sat back against the hurdle and laughed out loud, a sound that made the ewe start. Outside, the frost on the shed window had caught the lamp and formed a pale ring of light around the glass.

In the morning she took the calendar down, pressed the dried red rose from her mother's jar between its pages, and turned to February. The woman in the veil looked back, unchanged, and for once Nell didn't mind the company.
