Rock horns hand tattoo on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a hand making the rock horns gesture, shown as a flat, solid silhouette in dark grey ink. It sits on the lower leg just above a navy sock band, with a white sock printed with red lips beside it. The soft, angled composition places the tattoo near the top left, with the patterned socks filling the lower half of the frame.

The wind had been backing northerly since the Dogger shipping forecast, and by the third night the freighter Marlow Rose was rolling so hard that nobody could hear anything above the hull. Deckhand Tomas Greave had been lashing containers since four, and he was the only one aboard who had not been sick. Ruth Calloway, the radio officer, watched him through the wheelhouse glass and counted the seconds between waves.

The trouble was the signal lamp. It had fused in the squall, and the bridge could not see the foredeck. Ruth had a box of old flares and a tin of spare fuses but no way to pass a message to the men below without shouting, and shouting was useless in that gale. She remembered the bet from Hull, when Tomas had sworn he could make the whole galley laugh using only one hand, and he had won by folding two fingers down and grinning at the cook.
She climbed to the lower deck with a torch clamped between her teeth and pressed herself into the lee of the hatch coaming to wait for a lull. When Tomas came round the stack with his oilskin streaming, she lifted her hand, thumb tucked, little finger and index finger raised, the other two folded down, and held it steady in the torchlight until he looked. He stared, then his face split open, and he raised his own hand back, horns pointed at the black sky like a challenge the sea could not refuse.
They lashed the last box together by the light of that torch and the gesture, which the mate later swore was a filthy sign from the Thames barges. At Rotterdam, when the tide turned, Ruth found a pair of red-lipped socks folded on her bunk with a note in Tomas's cramped capitals: FOR THE NEXT TIME THE LAMP GOES.
