The roof over the east wing finally gave up on Tuesday, so the rain now comes straight down the staircase as if it has an appointment. I have moved the good china out of the dining room and into the gardener's cottage, where the damp is at least polite. You will laugh, but I counted the cups before I carried them across the lawn. Eleven saucers, twelve cups, one of them chipped at the handle where Lady Alston dropped it the week the bailiffs came.

The tea service is the last thing in this house that still sits properly on its shelf. Each cup has a little bunch of red roses painted on the side, faded to the colour of tinned strawberries, and the saucers are pink at the rims, which Mr Hollis insists is Staffordshire and not Sèvres, whatever his mother told him. I will not pretend I know the difference. I only know that Lady Alston took her tea from one of these every afternoon for forty years and never once looked at the roses.

Yesterday I found her in the orangery with the chipped cup in both hands, turning it so the flowers faced the glass. She said, "Pack the whole lot, Ada, and send it to the girl in Harrow who never had a proper saucer." So I have. The crate goes on Monday. Write to me when it arrives and tell me whether the roses survived the post, because I have grown rather fond of them.
